General questions about the SpeedTouch 330:

Q1: Where can I find the latest drivers and documentation (including User Guides) ?

A1: You will find the latest drivers upgrade on our public website. As the packages are upgrades, you'll need to have previous drivers installed.

Q2: What is the supported USB standard?

A2: Version 1.1. The USB-bus is a half duplex 12Mb-bus. USB 2.0 is not supported, but as it is backwards copatible, there shouldn't be any issues for using the SpeedTouch 330 on an USB2.0 port.

Q3: The LED's are both Amber colored, what's wrong?

A3: This means that the POST (Power On Self Test) is not correct. Check the connections. See also the USB-User-Guide.

Q4: What's the downstream speed?

A4: The maximum downstream speed is 8Mb on ATM-level, depending (of course) on line & noise conditions and the profile offered by your ADSL-operator.
Remarks: The USB-bus is a half-duplex 12 Mb bus that doesn't allow the maximum ADSL throughput. Using certain protocols also influences the efficiency of the connection. Due to the fact that a part of the protocol stack is done in software, the performance of your PC influences the speed of your connection.

Q5: There is no reaction from the LED's.

A5: This means that there are problems with the Power. The ST330 modem is a buspowered device. Be sure that if you are using a hub, that it supports buspowered devices. Check the connections. See the SpeedTouch 330 User Guide.

Q6: Is ADSL-Lite (ITU-T G.992.2) supported?

A6: The SpeedTouch 330 drivers are multi-mode and supports:G.Lite (ITU-T G.992.2) , full rate ANSI (ANSI T1.413 Issue2 DMT) and full rate ITU (ITU-T G.992.1).

Q7: Where is the power coming from?

A7: This modem is an USB-bus powered device. The power is supplied via the host or via a selfpowered hub. Be aware that this is a high-power device (500mA).

Q8: what is the Isochronous mode I read about, and what is the difference with the Bulk mode ?

A8: In the SpeedTouch USB, we only implemented the bulk mode, which means your SpeedTouch USB used the available USB bandwidth. But if you want to guarantee a certain USB bandwidth, you have to use the Isochronous mode, which allows to reserve a certain bandwidth exclusively. The SpeedTouch 330 supports both Bulk and Isochronous mode.

Q9: Does the modem support PPPoA or PPPoE?

A9: Both PPPoA and PPPoE are supported through embedded clients. Another possibility for PPPoE is to use the RFC1483 drivers, with an external PPPoE client.
Note: Windows XP and MAC OS X both have a PPPoE client by default.

Q10: Have you implemented the use of AAL2? This for voice over ATM?

A10: We have no plans yet to implement this.

Q11: Is the speed of my PC influencing the speed of my ST330 ?

A11: Yes it is. The whole ATM layering and TCP/IP is done on the USB host: your PC. Your CPU speed influences the performance of the USB modem. Also other programs that need CPU are decreasing the performance of the USB modem. Other USB devices also take bandwidth from the USB-bus and influences the performance of the USB modem.

Q12: My webcam doesn't work correctly since I installed the SpeedTouch 330.

A12: This can happen when two devices try to come up in Isochronous mode but the first one to start takes up too much bandwidth. This means the second device won't be able to start because it can't get the bandwidth it is asking. One possible workaround is to plug the devices in different USB roots. You may need an extra PCI USB card.

Q13: Is LLC encapsulation supported?

A13: Both LLC and VCmux encapsulation are supported.

Q14: Do I need new hardware for a new software release?

A14: You don't have any problem with upgrading software: the R2.0 drivers will work on any SpeedTouch USB or 330. Please be aware, though, that you will need a different hardware to use the ADSL over ISDN feature.

Q15: Is the loopback (VP/VC 0/21) functioning already?

A15: Yes. Loopback is supported for the operators up to 10kbps for VP/VC 0/21.

Q16: Does the USB support NAT/PAT?

A16: No. An USB modem can have only 1 host = 1 PC. NAT/PAT functionality is not logical. Connection sharing is possible through external programs ( i.e. Internet Connection Sharing in Windows ).

Q17: I have a problem with the suspend mode of my PC when using the ST330 with an external PPPoE client !

A17: The Suspend mode of the PC causes a problem to the PPPoE client. After going in Suspend the client still says that there's a PPP-session. Solution: close and reopen your PPPoE client.

Mac Drivers:

Q1: Using PPPoA, I get an error message saying "The connection attempt failed: PPP negotiations failed".

A1: Something has modified your configuration. Select Control Panels -> Modem -> Connect Via : Change "internal modem" to "Alcatel SpeedTouch USB".This often happens after a crash, because the MAC OS goes back to defaults.

Q2: What are the minimum hardware requirements to use the ST USB on a MAC?

A2: The minimum requirements are an Apple MAC G3 with onboard USB

Q3: In Mac OS X, I must reselect the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem after every reboot. What can I do about it?

A3: In the Apple Menu, go to system preferences and click on 'Network'. In the 'Show' field, select "active network ports". You should see all the network interfaces installed on your computer. To solve the issue, either drag the "Alcatel SpeedTouch USB" line to the first place, or uncheck all the other interfaces.

Q4: Does your driver support all versions of Mac OS X?

A4: The R2.0 driver supports Mac OS 10.1, and offers limited support for Mac OS 10.2 ( see following question ).

Q5: The diagnostics application doesn't always work under OS 10.2 ( Jaguar ).

A5: After opening the diagnostics you will get a blank window. Closing the diagnostics (not minimizing!) and reopening them fixes this, you will now get all counters and information. The same happens when you switch between the compact and the full view of the diagnostics; again closing and reopening fixes the problem.

Windows Drivers:

Q1: Why is my PC not working correctly with my modem? I have an USB port!

A1: A lot of PC's support USB. Microsoft Windows supports an USB-bus officially from Windows 98 onwards. Thereby there have been some problems with the first implementations of the USB standards on PC’s. The SpeedTouch 330 ADSL modem is a device that supports the official USB standards. See for more information the web page of your PC-manufacturer for possible updates of your USB drivers. If there is no reaction at all when you plug in an USB device, please verify that USB is enabled in the BIOS of your computer.

Q2: Is the modem supporting Windows 95 or Windows NT?

A2: No. The USB-bus is only fully supported under Windows 98 or higher.

Q3: Is it possible to connect more than 1 USB-ADSL modem on a PC?

A3: No. This is not supported. Windows allows just one PPP-session at a time on the host.

Q4: Are you using NDIS-4 or NDIS-5?

A4: NDIS-5 is included in Windows 98. Because we only support Windows 98 or higher we are using NDIS-5.

Q5: Have you created the PPPoA software yourself or are you using the standard Windows software for this?

A5: We are using the standard Windows software for the Dial-up and the RAS access. The PPPoA and PPPoE ( for the embedded PPPoE ) encapsulation is done in our drivers.

Q6: Modem drivers do not work on Windows 2000 dual processor PC’s?

A6: This is a known problem. It seems to be caused by the implementation of the UHCI USB Standard in Windows2000. Adding a extra PCI USB card usually solves the problem because those normally use OHCI. Dual processors under Windows XP does not have this problem.

Q7: How can I upgrade/install my SpeedTouch 330 drivers after an upgrade of a PC's operating system to Windows 2000 or XP ?

A7: The installation of the driver is done for a specific Operating System. Therefore, you'll need to reinstall the modem drivers after changing the OS. For the easiest installation, please follow these steps:- DOWNLOAD THE LATEST SPEED TOUCH 330 DRIVER: Before you upgrade or install the new OS, make sure to download the latest released version for the SpeedTouch 330 from the SpeedTouch site. Store this file locally on your hard drive. Uninstall the old version of the SpeedTouch 330.

- UPGRADE YOUR SYSTEM TO WINDOWS 2000 OR XP: Make sure not to lose the stored file (See step 1) during the upgrade. Make sure that the Speed Touch 330 is NOT connected to your system during the upgrade.

- INSTALL THE SPEED TOUCH 330 DRIVER: When MS Windows XP is installed, execute the driver install application from the directory where you stored the download.
This will initiate a fresh install of the Speed Touch 330.

- PLUG IN THE SPEED TOUCH 330

FOLLOW THE INSTALLER INSTRUCTIONS: Follow the instructions from the installer. For the phonebook or any other files, you must use your original Speed Touch 330 installation CD-Rom and point to it (browse) whenever the installer asks for such files.
Restart the computer when asked by the installer.

Q8: Dial-Up networking starts up when I try to access the Internet, even though I'm using PPPoE and already have a connection established.

A8: This happens under Windows ME. To correct this, open Dial-Up Networking ( Start -> settings -> Dial-Up Networking ), then right click on the icon of your default connection ( the one that pops up automatically ) and select Properties from the popup menu. Select the Dialing tab. Click on "Dial whenever a connection is not present". You may have to click on "This is my default connection" to be able to change this value. Click on OK. You may have to repeat this procedure for all the icons ( except the "make a new connection" icon ) present in the Dial-Up Networking window.

Q9: If your PC exits suspend mode, an external PPPoE client application may expect the SpeedTouch 330 drivers to be still up and running, which is not the case ( USB connections are powered down on suspend ).

A9: Close and reopen the PPPoE client connection

Q10: What Operating Systems are supported by the different releases of the ST 330 drivers?

A10:

R2.0 & R2.01 for Windows supports: Windows 98, 98SE, Windows2000,WindowsME and Windows XP

R2.0 for MAC supports Mac OS 8.6, 9.x and OS X ( R10.1).

R2.01 for MAC supports Mac OS 8.6, 9.x and OS X ( R10.1 and 10.2).

Q11: My modem often powers down without any reason and I have to reboot to connect again.

A11: This is a known problem with motherboards using the VIA chipset. Always install the latest Via4in1 drivers and USB filter from the Via website. If you have a Motherboard of the KT7 type, one workaround is to change the BIOS settings: set the ‘enhanced chipset performance’ setting on ‘enable’. This should help in most cases. For more information about the KT7 / VIA chipset issues with USB, you may read the the ViaHardware  FAQ pagesor the USBman page.

Q12: I get a Blue Screen when using Norton Personnal Firewall under Windows 2000.

A12: This problem has been identified and solved in cooperation with Symantec. The bugfix for Norton Personnal Firewall is available trough Norton LiveUpdate.

Q13: Can I use ICS ( Internet Connection Sharing ) with the SpeedTouch USB ?

A13: All our modems can be used with ICS. Please refer to your access provider before using ICS, because this may be illegal depending to your contract. For more information about ICS, read the information in the Windows Helpfile or on the Microsoft website.

Q14: While upgrading, the Upgrade wizard seems to block after displaying the "Disabling speed touch modem" message.

A14: This happens sometimes when you try to upgrade while beeing connected to the internet. Please disconnect before upgrading. If thgis happens while you are already disconnected, please reboot and try again.

Q15: When upgrading, I get an error message saying "The current driver can not be upgraded by this software package".

A15: Upgrading from PPP to RFC1483 or from RFC1483 to PPP is not allowed anymore. Please uninstall the previous drivers before instaling the new ones.

Q16: I'm using the "run as administrator" function in Win2000 or XP, but I still can't install the ST 330 modem.

A16: The 'run as administrator' function in Win2000/XP allows a user to install software, without being logged in as Administrator. But this doesn't allow the user to install hardware, so when Windows tries to install the hardware drivers, it fails. To install the ST 330 properly, please login as administrator or with administrator privileges.
